At the South London and Maudsley Trust they have a national specialist service in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). Where their are specialist treating patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in an out-patient and in a residential setting.
For the residential unit, patients stay in an unstaffed house in the grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital. There is also a self-contained family flat. The average stay is up to 12 weeks. Alternatively, intensive CBT can be provided over one week for some patients with OCD. Referrals are accepted on a national basis and usually need to be made by a consultant psychiatrist. However some Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) allow open access for an assessment or treatment. Patients may also be funded by the Department of Health if they have OCD and meet treatment refractory criteria. The national service is especially suitable for those who have not made sufficient progress with CBT locally or where the local services are not developed. The unit was originally under the care of Professor Isaac Marks and has a long history of high quality care and proven outcome results.
Out-patients with OCD are treated at the Maudsley Hospital at the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma. Local patients can be referred by their GP. National patients usually have to be referred by their Consultant psychiatrist and funded by their PCT or by the Department of Health if they fulfil criteria for being treatment refractory (see, the centre for Anxiety Disorder and Trauma website). National adolescent out-patient can be referred to Dr Isobel Heyman at the Maudsley Hospital. A small number of treatment refractory adolescents with OCD may be admitted under Dr David Veale's care on the NHS to The Priory Hospital North London after being assessed by Dr Heyman.
