EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE CAN HELP WARD OFF DEPRESSION Print E-mail

Presently, there are ways to battle depression.  There are various means to deal with this condition on its onset.  You do not have to wait for depression to deeply set-in before curing it.  Once, you feel that a friend, a family member or you are sliding into it, immediately find ways to confront it. It would be difficult to say how prepared you are when depression happens to you.  All of us have different coping mechanisms.  There is no real standard on how to approach this problem. But what I am about to share may serve as a guide, an experience you may learn from.

I believe being emotionally intelligent can help a person divert away from depression.  Everyone may get depressed because of multiple reasons. It may be because of such a shallow reason like it’s not a sunny day or a serious matter like the lost of a loved one or the bankruptcy of his business. But no matter what the reason may be, it all boils down on how mature a person is to handle and deal with failure.  He may be so stressed with his problems that feelings of guilt, fear, anxiety all mount up and pulls him down into depression. However, if you as a child were well-equipped on how to handle failure and the above-mentioned feelings I strongly believe that you will not be easily knocked down by this mental condition.

Often parents want nothing but the best for their children.  They have the desire to shelter them from harm and if possible to shield them from anything that may shatter their dreams and ambitions. Parents also would like to take the toll when their kids get sick. In other words, they would do anything for their child.  As the saying goes, too much of everything is not good. And so, too much love from parents is not good for the child. It is as if they place their children inside a snow ball and they just want to protect and watch them there. This is not healthy. You are not giving your child the opportunity to grow. Not allowing your child to experience hurt, frustration, disappointment, failure and a lot more at an early age is not an act of protection but an act of deprivation.  You are depriving him the opportunity to learn from these feelings. These feelings which will toughen him and mould him to be a better person.

Parents must keep in mind that they can still show their love for their child from a distance. They should learn to let go of them at an early stage for it will benefit the child more.  It will allow him to know himself more, a chance of exploration. As we all know to fail is like being a winner because we gain more in losing. It gives us the motivation to make ourselves the best we can be.  At the end of the day, the child will still run back to his parents for their assuring embrace and kiss.  Then they know that no matter how many times they fail, their parents will always be there to love and support them all the way.
