Often we hear our family members or friends say that they feel depressed. It may be because of several reasons such as heartache, low grades in school, bad day at work, no money, etc. It is endless. But their depression is more of a temporary sadness. They just want to air out their feelings and after a matter of seconds, minutes, hours, a whole day they will be back to their old perky self. All humans undergo an emotional roller coaster ride. They may feel happy, sad, anxious, angry, afraid and a whole lot more. A person may experience diversified feelings all at once and this is what makes us distinct and above the animal kingdom.
However, if this feeling of sadness is prolonged like months and even years it is a matter to be greatly concerned about. Especially if a persons’ daily activities are affected. Before, he may be involved in exercise, regular work-outs at they gym, unwinding with friends every Friday night, going to the salon once every two weeks, treating himself to a spa once a month and many more then all of a sudden he withdraws from all these. He refuses to get out from bed, to see or talk with friends, he just wants to stay at home and do nothing but stare out into space. A worse case is when he ponders on the thought of suicide and may actually do several attempts to take his own life. If this occurs, professional help is definitely needed.
Doctors specialising on such cases, psychiatrists and psychologists say that in every human being there is a thin line dividing normal and not being normal. Not normal in the sense that he does not do the things he enjoys involving himself in. He alienates himself from the world and from life itself. A lot of factors may be the cause of his depression, it would be best that the reason should be acknowledged and accepted. Support of family members and loved ones will be of great help in his speedy recovery but most of all professional help must come into play.
To seek professional help and just to even accept your condition is not something to be ashamed of. It can happen to everyone and it is not a rare occurrence. Depression is brought about by a chemical imbalance in a person’s brain and often triggered by stress, lack of sleep and poor diet.
The important thing is, depression can be cured. It is not an extraordinary situation to be in. First, you have to acknowledge then accept your condition. Seek the help and support of your family and friends. Allow them to help you. Third, be open to medical attention if needed. Always remember if your will power is strong, you can overcome anything, most especially depression.
